Tropical Rainforest Producers
Did you know that bromeliads are distantly related to pineapples? Well, your about to find out a lot more. Dense, waxy leaves form a bowl, and bromeliads even have a mini ecosystem of their own! The bowls catch rainwater, and can store several gallons of it. The entire food chain thrives within a bromeliad, with the bromeliad as the producer! The bromeliad is also eaten by other rainforest animals. There are over 300 spiecies of bromeliads, and can all grow outside when the temp stays above freezing all year round.
STRANGLER FIG
_______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________
Not only is a strangler fig a producer, but also a predator! A strangler's fruit is vital to birds and monkeys, then the seed is dropped on high trees. At first, the seedling strangler is no harm to the host, but when it sends roots to the ground, it becomes a major threat! It surrounds the host then strangles and eventully kills the host. The strangler now has a hollow space inside it, and produces more fruit. Did you know that there are many different spiecies of strangler figs? They produce fruit at different times of year, makeing them a "key" spiecies
